Acute Care Nurse Practitioner | Cardiovascular ICU | Phoenix, AZ

430-bed acute-care hospital is seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) for their cardiovascular ICU. This is a 40 hour work week.

Voted “Best Places to Work” in the Phoenix metro area and rated as a Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Network. This state-of-the-art, 14-bed cardiovascular ICU specializes in recovery of open heart surgery patients including thoracic, vascular, and GI surgeries. Over 500 open heart patients per year. Excellent clinical and administrative support including CNAs and Health Unit Coordinators. Software and equipment is highly advanced.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation and education as a highly specialized nurse practitioner within the cardiovascular ICU.
  • Provides patient assessments through patient exams, medical history, interpretation of diagnostic procedures, and development and implementation of patient treatment plans.
  • Assess health status, diagnoses health conditions, and plans care to address acute and critical patient care needs.
  • Plans and initiates treatment to achieve and maintain physical system stability during an episode of acute, unstable, and/or critical illness.
  • Population focus for the nurse practitioner is with patients with acute, unstable, and/or critical illnesses; individuals with complex chronic illnesses who are experiencing episodic illness or an exacerbation of one or more chronic illnesses; and their families with goal of treatment to restore the patient to previous or optimal level of physical function and health.
  • The nurse practitioner works within the scope specified by the applicable State Board of Nursing Scope of Practice, as well as the organization’s medical staff bylaws.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess knowledge of clinical care and patient treatment as normally obtained through the completion of masters degree in nursing.
  • Must be approved to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner  by the State Board of Nursing by proof of license/certification.
  • Requires current RN license in the state of Arizona.
  • Must be certified to practice by the Arizona Board of Nursing within a particular population as a nurse practitioner.
  • Requires current BLS certification.
  • Requires DEA license.
  • Additional technical and professional certifications may be required based on type of nurse practitioner and scope of delineation document under medical staff services for an individual facility.
  • Exhibits an exemplary professional demeanor and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications and database management.

One nice thing about most ACNP practices is that once you leave work you are off; no call because someone else is working in your place.

The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized training in acute care settings. What can I expect from an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner salary?

Salaries of Acute Care Nurse Practitioners are usually more than that of Nurse Practitioners in other specialties. Inpatient settings will pay ACNPs a base salary for new graduates between $78,000-$85,000 with the potential of making more through bonuses. If the new graduate has substantial experiences as a nurse in related fields then a beginning salary could be closer to $90,000. For experienced ACNPs it is not uncommon to see salaries over $100,000. $95,000-$110,000 is an expected salary range for experienced acute care nurse practitioners. In the traditional employment settings for acute care nurse practitioners salaries will rarely exceed $120,000.

The potential to make over $120,000 does exist for acute care nurse practitioners, but these are usually hourly-based locum tenens assignments or being an independent contractor in emergency medicine. The arrangements where this higher pay can be found have its trade-offs though. As a locums/PRN there is less security and more travel. Will there always be another assignment? And if so, where will it be located? As a contractor you won’t have benefits. This means no health insurance, no vacation, no 401-k retirement plans, and you’ll usually have to pay for your own CMEs, licensing, dues, and even malpractice insurance.
